FATE: THE WINX SAGA – SEASON 1

What’s the story plot?

The story is based on a girl, Bloom, whose life turns upside down when she discovers she is a fairy. And she has no idea of the mystical “Otherworld”. There are ones who are Fairies and there are ones who are specialists. The specialists save from the evil burned ones. Bloom is a fire fairy and due to her significance she is wanted by the burned ones.

Bloom lies to her parents and comes to Alfea – the magic world, where she comes across some life changing truths about herself and are biological parents. Bloom even learns her links to some influential personalities of Alfea.

What’s to like about Fate: The Winx Saga

  • The series shows an emotional side and also the bullying students face in schools.
  • It is a story about 4 friends facing the heat from others and finds out the truth about Bloom. It even shows the value of friends.
  • It gives us suspense. It points at which season one ends keeps us on our toes and eagerly waiting for the second one.
  • It’s totally binge-able in a sitting having just 6 episodes and an interesting plot line.

Some questionable loopholes

  • Beatrix’s Prison – if she was a powerful spy and an enemy then why was her prison not under proper security?
  • Secret chamber guarding – if the secret chamber has Rosalind then why wasn’t it guarded. This show seems to have a lot of problems about the securities.
  • Stella’s Escape – if she was the princess of Solaria –  the kingdom which has a lot of military force and security then how did she escape so easily?
  • Death and Return of Andreas – Silva’s killed him in order to protect the city from the genocidal maniac Rosalind but they should have checked the body if he’s really dead or not. And in the finale how he just reappeared suddenly is highly questionable.
  • Fireproof Clothes – How does the clothes not catch fire and everything else does. It’s very disturbing as in the end she even transforms into a full fairy and get fire wings yet not a scratch on her clothes.

What do we have to say about it?

We would give a ⅗. Though it has some tempting elements but it still lacks a lot of crucial elements. It is currently streaming on Netflix.

HOLIDATE

Rating: 3 out of 5.

All the Christmas films I’ve watched so far give us warmth and embrace us with the holidays festivities. This year Netflix presented us with “Holidate” starring Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey.

” Why does the next girlfriend always have to be younger and hotter”

Sloane (Holidate)

It is a movie about Sloane (Roberts) and Jackson (Bracey) who are single for a very long time. They accidently meet in a mall during Christmas and indulge in a conversation about Holidate – which means having a date only for the holidays. They start doing that for all the holidays like New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s day and Halloween. Till halloween they have started to develop feelings for each other but are not able to express it. Jackson tells her his feelings but she thought he was just being sympathetic and at Christmas Sloane publicly expresses her love for him.

Throughout the movie Sloane seems very irritating in every way. The first words which come out her mouth are “Fucking Holidays” and from that we can sense the tone of the film. This movie falls in the rom-com category but it fails to provide either of them. And it’s just a jumble of both and in a very terrible way.

The poster and the trailer seemed very positive but the movie didn’t give that quality of humor. So we can always watch the classic’s and spend our holidays.

The movie is currently streaming on Netflix

SCHITT’S CREEK

Rating: 5 out of 5.

A total countryside America shown with an unappealing opening to it. It is a story of a wealthy family which goes bankrupt and they have to start again from square one in a small town which they bought years ago as a joke.

This is a very under-rated show with the best quirky humour. It has the best storyline, genuinely funny jokes and heart-warming. Love the character of each and every Rose. and talk about Moira’s vocabulary!!

I just LOVE LOVE LOVE this show! I also love how each and every character evolves with the passing of time and in each and every new season they are a bit more evolved. The most change can be found in David.

” I don’t think parenting books would approve of you saying this to me “

David Rose (Schitt’s Creek)

Throughout the show I was rooting out for Stevie and David. They are so good together and even gave hints that they will end but together but then David goes with someone else and gets married to him.

As soon as the mismatched group gets to know each other they start to get along really well. Each and every joke is perfectly timed and beautifully executed. Alexis Rose seems to be my spirit animal. Just love the way she talks. In Fact just love the way everyone talks, like everyone has an accent.

” David stop acting like a Disgruntled Pelican “

Moira Rose (Schitt’s Creek)

Moira and David seem to be the star of the show to me. Even after watching the whole show I haven’t found a single episode where I did not laugh out loud. It’s really a tricky show to get into but trust me it’s worth the watch. It gives us honest laughs and the characters become like a family.

THE AGE OF ADALINE

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Release Year – 2015

Genre – Drama, Fantasy, Romance

Cast –  Blake Lively, Michiel Huisman, Harrison Ford

Director -Lee Toland Krieger

Writers – J. Mills Goodloe, Salvador Paskowitz

Producer – Tom Rosenberg, Sidney Kimmel, Gary Lucchesi

Storyline –

Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively) has miraculously remained a youthful 29 years of age for nearly eight decades, never allowing herself to get close to anyone lest they discover her secret. However, a chance encounter with a charismatic philanthropist named Ellis Jones (Michiel Huisman) reawakens Adaline’s long-suppressed passion for life and romance. When a weekend with Ellis’ parents threatens to expose the truth, Adaline makes a decision that changes her life forever. A reflex causes her heart to slow, and her breathing to stop, before a bolt of lightning hits her car, prompting a compression of electrons in her DNA that will be discovered in the year 2035, and named the Bowman Principle. Thanks to this unusual occurrence, the story goes, Adaline “will never age another day.”

Our Views –

Personally I feel that Blake’s performance is always so sympathetic and appealing and on the point to its character. Blake looks very young and stunning but her speech is all very old and wise. She has all the wisdom and benefits of the age and none of the disadvantages.

Aging can depend on the way we look at it. This whole movie depends on it but in all it seemed a very slow moving movie. It could have shown what Adaline could have done with her immortal life. The last part of the movie is very good for a romantic heart and leaves you teary- eyed.

ISN’T IT ROMANTIC

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Release Year – 2019

Genre –  Comedy, Fantasy, Romance

Cast –  Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth, Adam DeVine, Priyanka Chopra

Director -Todd Strauss-Schulson

Producer – Gina Matthews, Todd Garner, Grant Scharbo

Storyline –

Natalie is a New York architect who works hard to get noticed at her job, but is more likely to deliver coffee and bagels than design the city’s next skyscraper. Things go from bad to weird when she gets knocked unconscious during a subway mugging and magically wakes up to find herself in an alternate universe. Always cynical about love, Natalie’s worst nightmare soon comes true when she suddenly discovers that she’s playing the leading lady in a real-life romantic comedy.

Our Views –

The movie is very cliche though it has its own amount of laughs. It is hard to know whether the movie is trying to sell the idea of self love or soul mates. The movie mocks typical romcoms but it ends being the same one miserably. The different side of Liam is very stupid on screen and not pleasing to look. Though the rom-com parody is good but through half way we end up looking at the run time and wishing it ends soon.

A SIMPLE FAVOR

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Release Year – 2018

Genre – Mystery/Comedy

Cast – Blake Lively, Anna Kendrick, Henry Golding, Linda Cardellini, Andrew Rannells, Rupert Friend, Ian Ho, Eric Johnson

Director – Paul Feig

Producer – Paul Feig, Jessie Henderson

Story Line –

In A SIMPLE FAVOR, Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) is a suburban single mom with lots of energy for crafts, school projects, and her vlog. She unexpectedly makes friends with fellow mom Emily (Blake Lively), an aloof fashion-plate with a handsome husband (Henry Golding), a great house, and a seemingly perfect life. When Emily goes missing, Stephanie sets out to solve the mystery — quickly discovering she didn’t know her friend as well as she thought.

Our Views –

It is a great movie with a good story line for adults. There is a lavish lifestyle of Blake and a typical mum life of Anna. It has a lot of everything like a lot of humour, lot or thriller and a spike of crime. We can see a very different Blake compared to her role of Serena Van Der Woodsen of the Gossip Girl and here we can see her in a bold role with small slutrly smiles.

The movie focuses more on Kendrick’s thinking but I was personally inclined towards Blake. The movie gives various moods and scene shifts in a very smart way like giving brief laughs to brighten dark moments. Kendrick becomes a girl detective and solves the mystery which Emily Nelson(Blake Lively) becomes after she ignores some red flags.

She catches Emily red handed and sends her to jail. The movie is smart, funny, dark, mystery and its almost like all in one.

GAME NIGHT

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Release Year – 2018

Genre – Action, Comedy, Crime

Cast–  Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams, Kyle Chandler

Directed by – John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein

Produced by – Jason Bateman, John Davis, John Fox

Story Line –

Max and Annie’s weekly game night gets kicked up a notch when Max’s brother Brooks arranges a murder mystery party — complete with fake thugs and federal agents. So when Brooks gets kidnapped, it’s all supposed to be part of the game. As the competitors set out to solve the case, they start to learn that neither the game nor Brooks are what they seem to be. The friends soon find themselves in over their heads as each twist leads to another unexpected turn over the course of one chaotic night.

Our View

The Game Night is for competitive couples who love some adventure. It also has a car chase, violent incident which leads to an impromptu surgery, house party and in a never ending seemingly heist. It can be seen that many actors face serious injuries which in reality can be life taking but the actors seem to bounce back and resume the game. The comedy is very smart but the movie seems very long and boring in the end.

NEVER HAVE I EVER(SEASON 1)

Genre – Teen Drama

Produced By – Mindy Kaling, Lang Fisher, Howard Klein, David Miner, Tristram Shapeero

Storyline –

The story centers around Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), a 15-year-old girl from Sherman Oaks, California. After a socially horrible freshman year, Devi wants to change her social status, but friends, family, and feelings do not make it easy for her.

After Devi’s father, Mohan (Sendhil Ramamurthy) passes away, Devi loses the use of her legs for three months. The following year, she tries to deal with her grief, Indian identity and school life, also struggling with her relationship with her mother, Nalini (Poorna Jagannathan), her beautiful cousin, Kamala (Richa Moorjani), her two best friends, Eleanor (Ramona Young) and Fabiola (Lee Rodriguez), her high school crush, Paxton (Darren Barnet), and her nemesis, Ben (Jaren Lewison).

The series is mostly narrated by professional tennis player John McEnroe, with one of the episodes narrated by Andy Samberg.

Our View-

The episode starts with Devi V. praying to god about some requests about this year of high school. She wants to fall in love and have a boyfriend who is a hottie and wants to change the image of her in the minds of everyone at school. She has a huge crush on Paxton and very crazy about him and wants to have sex with him and she approaches him to with this unfamiliar request but she cannot go forward with it. Paxton gives vibes of Peter Kevensky to Jake Ryan to Gilbert Blythe to Jordan Catalano and he is thoughtful and observant. Her nemesis, Ben first gives her trouble but they start getting along very well and she even kisses him and  stays at his home when she leaves her home when her mum decides to go back to India.

Devi is very jealous of her cousin Kamala as she thinks she is better than her in everything and mother seems overly fond of her. Kamala’s character, on the other hand, is that of a confused woman, supposedly doing her masters at Caltech, with a South Asian boyfriend who she dumps with remarkable ease for a desi stranger. Devi seems relieved when she knows about Kamala’s boyfriend as to know that she is not who she shows to her mother.

It shows a very typical Indian side leaving in America like the boy coming to see the girl in an arranged marriage, the ganesh pooja, Indian community meeting and gossiping, people abandoning a woman who married outside the caste. In season 2 Devi will have to choose between Paxton and Ben.

CRAZY RICH ASIANS

She’s also surprised to learn that Nick’s family is extremely wealthy and he’s considered one of the country’s most eligible bachelors. Thrust into the spotlight, Rachel must now contend with jealous socialites, quirky relatives and something far, far worse — Nick’s disapproving mother.

The movie also throws some humour with family scenes of Awkwafina and Jimmy O. Yang, and these scenes are very smart and breezy. It focuses on the equal footing of a couple in a marriage and far more concerned with mutual happiness with all the wealth in between them. When you are feeling low and unlucky with zero feelings about falling in love again, this movie will just get back on track.

“I am not leaving because…. I think I’m not enough – maybe for the first time in my life I Know I Am”

-Rachel Chu

Our Views

In this movie, it focuses on the importance of family. It is a romantic film rich in emotion and very Asian at its core. It shows a wealthy Chinese-American dynasty which enjoys a lavish lifestyle and on hand and on the other hand it shows a single mother and her daughter. The movie is shot in Singapore and with various scenes with beautiful locations.

StoryLine –

This stranger is a woman in her 20s with a baseball cap and a bomber jacket, and is learned to be correlated with more secrets as the series progresses. This secret affects the man’s wife who goes missing as a result.

Our Views

As the series evolves, it can be seen that there is a stranger who has many targets in the town to reveal their secret publicly for money. The secrets are revealed about the life around Adam Price (Richard Armitage). This series keeps us on our toes throughout. We can see a skillful tying of all the twisty knots and gives a charging experience. But the end given was a bit unsatisfactory and failed to provide the climax which is built throughout the series. The main crux which Adam gets in the end is that the secret is better buried. The speed is properly propelled and not speeded.

THE OLD GUARD

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Release Year – 2020

Genre – Action, Adventure, Fantasy

Cast – Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Marwan Kenzari,Luca Marinelli Harry, Melling Veronica,    NgoMatthias Schoenaerts, Chiwetel Ejiofor

Director – Gina Prince-Bythewood

Writers: Greg Rucka

Story Line

Four undying warriors who’ve secretly protected humanity for centuries become targeted for their mysterious powers just as they discover a new immortal.

Our View

There is a team of immortals who is led by Andy (Charlize Theron) and she finds all the immortals living on the earth. They don’t wear any fancy clothes nor they have a cap nor can they fly nor they have any alter ego and just good work.

Andy appears to be the boss and she is doing this the longest since antiquity, when she went by Andromache. The others include Joe (Marwan Kenzari) and Nicky (Luca Marinelli), lovers who met cute on opposite sides of the Crusades, and Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts), who joined up during the Napoleonic Wars. and the youngest United States Marine named Nile Freemen (Kiki Layne).

But Nile struggles understanding her immortality. She was familiar with the concept of time coming for everyone, sooner or later and having a hard time understanding her existence. She even decided to leave the team but then she has a change of heart. People starts to make stories about their lives. They are captured and given to a pharmaceutical company, and research is conducted on them. But they all are saved by Nile after she changed her mind.

But the movie seems predictable enough and hence, seems a bit long. Regardless from its flaws it is a good movie to watch. It seems that the ending is that there might be a sequel in line.

SPACE FORCE

“BOOTS ON THE MOON”

“ITS GOOD TO BE BLACK ON MOON”

An American sitcom brought to us by the creators who previously worked together are Greg Daniels and Steve Carell in the famous show “The Office”. The space force revolves around creating a sixth branch of the armed services: The Space Force. It also stars Lisa Kudrow or also know for her role as “Pheobe” in Friends.

STORY LINE

It starts with a four-star General Mark Naird (Steve Carell) is made to lead the new branch,  Space Force. Mark seems very shocked with SecDef appointing him, but he fulfills his duty very well. It consists of 1 season and 10 episodes. Mark faces various challenges throughout the season. It starts with Space Force pressured to launch a satellite – EPSILON 6 despite the warning against the scientists. After the launch EPSILON 6 is hobbled by enemy satellite and mark must take a well reasoned and adequate step. Mark makes a choice between a chimp and a dog to save his beloved satellite. Mark and his head scientist Dr. Adrain Mallory goes to the Washington for the budget hearing. Space Force is offered by a young women entrepreneur to use her revolutionary fuel. They build a Lunar habitat and again faced some challenges from enemies. In the last episode, Mark is forced to unwilling step as proportionate response against the enemy.

Our Views

It is a workplace comedy, that centers a group of people.Space Force shows charismatic friendship between Mark and Dr. Mallory and a different level of trust between them. Lisa Kudrow has a small role but has a greater impact on the show. It has a witty voice of science and lack of logic. But it is definitely relaxing to watch it once and funny too.
