THE GOOD PLACE

What’s the plot?

The Good Place talks about their version of afterlife and their version of heaven and hell. According to them there is no such thing as heaven or hell. Every person who dies either goes to a good place or goes to a bad place and one human even placed in a medium place because of her on-going trial is going on since decades.

There are points counted and all the people who did more good than bad go to the good place and the rest go to the bad place as both the name suggests. All place have Janet who works like Siri. You call her name and she appears and she knows EVERYTHING.

The protagonist Elenor thinks that by mistake she is placed in the good place and she tries to modify her behaviour by learning  philosophy from her soulmate Chidi.

There is also Tahini and Jason who are paired soulmates. The soulmates are paired using artificial intelligence. Jason appears to have taken an oath of silence and Tahini who is a beauty who just loves to throw a party and be her fabulous self.

Eventually, Eleanor realizes that the four humans have actually been in an experimental Bad Place all along, chosen by Michael who poses as the architect of that good place, to torture each other emotionally and psychologically for eternity.

In the second season, Michael tries to wipe out the memories of all 4, Elanor, Chidi, Jason and Tahani but each time they figure out that it is bad place all along. There is a judge, who hears the cases and gives her final verdict on any situation. She is savage and she loves watching TV shows.

In the third season, all 4 come to earth and take part in a research study with Chidi’s colleague Simon. They learn about the afterlife, they also learn that no one has entered into the good place since centuries and they report this to the judge.

In the final season, they experiment to check if humans can improve their behaviour and show positive results. This way the 4 people and Micheal and Janet earn their place in the good place. But the good place soon becomes boring and then Elnor comes up with the solution of ending their afterlife by peacefully exiting the good place.

In the last episode, Jason, Chidi and Elanor choose to leave the good place, Tahani becomes the good place architect and Michael is allowed to live on Earth.

  • Its hilarious
  • Unique storyline
  • Twists and turns
  • Carefully crafted world
  • you cannot swear in the good place

What do we have to say about it?

We would like to give 5/5. There are not enough shows with this storyline, it is something unique in itself. Give it a go and you might like it.

FATE: THE WINX SAGA – SEASON 1

What’s the story plot?

The story is based on a girl, Bloom, whose life turns upside down when she discovers she is a fairy. And she has no idea of the mystical “Otherworld”. There are ones who are Fairies and there are ones who are specialists. The specialists save from the evil burned ones. Bloom is a fire fairy and due to her significance she is wanted by the burned ones.

Bloom lies to her parents and comes to Alfea – the magic world, where she comes across some life changing truths about herself and are biological parents. Bloom even learns her links to some influential personalities of Alfea.

What’s to like about Fate: The Winx Saga

  • The series shows an emotional side and also the bullying students face in schools.
  • It is a story about 4 friends facing the heat from others and finds out the truth about Bloom. It even shows the value of friends.
  • It gives us suspense. It points at which season one ends keeps us on our toes and eagerly waiting for the second one.
  • It’s totally binge-able in a sitting having just 6 episodes and an interesting plot line.

Some questionable loopholes

  • Beatrix’s Prison – if she was a powerful spy and an enemy then why was her prison not under proper security?
  • Secret chamber guarding – if the secret chamber has Rosalind then why wasn’t it guarded. This show seems to have a lot of problems about the securities.
  • Stella’s Escape – if she was the princess of Solaria –  the kingdom which has a lot of military force and security then how did she escape so easily?
  • Death and Return of Andreas – Silva’s killed him in order to protect the city from the genocidal maniac Rosalind but they should have checked the body if he’s really dead or not. And in the finale how he just reappeared suddenly is highly questionable.
  • Fireproof Clothes – How does the clothes not catch fire and everything else does. It’s very disturbing as in the end she even transforms into a full fairy and get fire wings yet not a scratch on her clothes.

What do we have to say about it?

We would give a ⅗. Though it has some tempting elements but it still lacks a lot of crucial elements. It is currently streaming on Netflix.

BRIDGERTON : SEASON 1

What’s the storyline?

The story is based upon the time when young girls are about to make a debut in the london marriage market. The protagonist “Daphne Bridgerton” is admired the most by the queen and she is the eldest daughter of the Bridgerton family.

There is another family of the Featheringtons who are very envious of the Bridgertons and their 4 daughters are also about to make a debut in the market. They also need to take care of a girl who is a distant cousin of the Featheringtons “Marina Thompson” who is far prettier than the other daughters and who later turns out to be pregnant.

Daphne does not get proper suitors and is very desperate to find one. Meanwhile she meets with “Simon Basset” the Duke of Hastings, who she finds annoying at first but later she develops feelings for him. The duke is also in love with her, but both are unaware of the love for each other. The duke had an unpleasant relationship with his father and made a vow to him on his deathbed that he would never give an heir to the throne. Due to this he has no intention of marrying any one.

Daphne and Simon are seen kissing in the garden and they are seen by Daphne’s brother “Anthony Bridgerton” (Viscount) and he gets so furious of Simon that he challenges a duel.

After the duel Simon agrees to marry Daphne. Firstly the marriage just seems something of an arrangement but then they are very happily into it.

Later Daphne finds out about the vow and forcefully tries to get pregnant but fails. This again leads to tension in their marriage. And at last all the misunderstandings are cleared and they are blessed with a son.

On the other side Marina Thompson is forced to marry any suitor in order to keep a secret of her pregnancy. She even traps Colin Bridgerton to marry her but the truth is revealed and the marriage is cancelled.

What’s to like about Bridgerton?

  • If you are a fan of Gossip Girl then you will definitely like Bridgerton. In this series there is a Lady Whistledown who seems to move the story forward.
  • We can see a very different set of British vocabulary which I found very interesting.
  • There is a sense of suspense which kept me on my toes to keep looking forward to on what will happen next
  • It is a small and wholesome series of 10 episodes which can be binged watched in a go.
  • The scenic views are also very breath-taking and even the wardrobes of the character are well chosen and apt.

What do we have to say about Bridgerton?

We would like to rate it a 5/5. It is a really good show and a must watch. Currently streaming on Netflix.

THE FABULOUS LIVES OF BOLLYWOOD WIVES

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Before jumping into the review can we take a moment to appreciate the wardrobe of each and every lead actress and even KJo not the less. I’ve seen many negative comments regarding this show but to be honest I found this show really entertaining. Though it has its own parts of monotonous and meticulously elaborated drama it was still very fun to watch.

The impact that the promo created was to show a glimpse into the inner lives of the wives of the Bollywood superstars but somehow it gave everything other than this. It seemed like an Indian version of “ Keeping Up With the Kardashians”. We cannot see a proper destination to where the mini television series is taking us too.

The women casting starts with Maheep Kapoor, then comes Seema Khan with Bhavna Panday and lastly enters Neelam Kothari Soni. We can see the women dangling with the personal growth issue aligned with their duties as their mothers. Their relationship with their husbands seemed super staged.

Maheep Kapoor is seen totally focused on the career of her daughter and how she should tackle things ahead as she’s leaping into the Bollywood business.

Seema Khan is battling between finding her new self, her passion and her children.

Bhavna Panday is seen giving her experiences and all together seen a bit off apart from her superstitious and a loggerhead with Seema Khan.

And lastly Neelam Kothari Soni is in dilemma about whether she should return to do movies or not.

The locations shown are mere distractions to the point that there is nothing much to carry on the story with. They go to Paris for the Le Bal and then they top it off with Doha. We can see many actors in the party hosted by Gauri Khan.

This series shows nothing but Glamour! Glamour! Glamour!

This is a show in which you can love it or hate it but you cannot ignore it.

Currently streaming on Netflix.

SCHITT’S CREEK

Rating: 5 out of 5.

A total countryside America shown with an unappealing opening to it. It is a story of a wealthy family which goes bankrupt and they have to start again from square one in a small town which they bought years ago as a joke.

This is a very under-rated show with the best quirky humour. It has the best storyline, genuinely funny jokes and heart-warming. Love the character of each and every Rose. and talk about Moira’s vocabulary!!

I just LOVE LOVE LOVE this show! I also love how each and every character evolves with the passing of time and in each and every new season they are a bit more evolved. The most change can be found in David.

” I don’t think parenting books would approve of you saying this to me “

David Rose (Schitt’s Creek)

Throughout the show I was rooting out for Stevie and David. They are so good together and even gave hints that they will end but together but then David goes with someone else and gets married to him.

As soon as the mismatched group gets to know each other they start to get along really well. Each and every joke is perfectly timed and beautifully executed. Alexis Rose seems to be my spirit animal. Just love the way she talks. In Fact just love the way everyone talks, like everyone has an accent.

” David stop acting like a Disgruntled Pelican “

Moira Rose (Schitt’s Creek)

Moira and David seem to be the star of the show to me. Even after watching the whole show I haven’t found a single episode where I did not laugh out loud. It’s really a tricky show to get into but trust me it’s worth the watch. It gives us honest laughs and the characters become like a family.

EMILY IN PARIS

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS ENOUGH!! It is an irresistible fantasy. It is the best chick flick movie I’ve seen so far in 2020. Being a Darren Star movie we cannot expect anything less than this. We are all aware of his masterpiece, Sex and the City (both series and movies) and it needs no introduction.

Why this series stands out than others –

  1. EMILY!!  EMILY!! EMILY!! EMILY!!
  2. The city of love – PARIS
  3. The clothes worn by everyone
Mindy, Emily and Camille

It has a total of 10 episodes in a season with about 25 min average per episode. You can binge watch it in a go. It shows a story of a girl who was not supposed to end up for a year in Paris but as her boss cannot go, she gets the chance to go.

” Chinese people are mean behind your back. French people, mean to your face “

Mindy (Emily in Paris)

Emily faces many many challenges in Paris but she always pleases everyone and her charm is loved and she is wanted by everyone. Though there are some cliche parts like there is a bitch boss who till the very end doesn’t like her, the first boy she sees in Paris,  she falls in love with her, everyone hates her in the beginning but then magically everyone likes her except her boss of course.

Emily and Mindy

Emily has a magic where she can clear all the problems. She is very passionate about her job and she is a very humble and down to earth person. She started from just 20 followers to 25k+ followers and her instagram influence helped her grab many clients and win a heart or two. And unintentionally became an influencer.

This show will fill your heart as it has a lot of croissants, wines, laughers, friendships, tiny bit of heart breaks and a lot of chic and Paris at heart.

Story Line –

The main plot revolves around a girl who ends up in jail for helping her girlfriend by being a drug mule for her. And it revolves around how her life is in prison and how it changes during the course of time. Her course of time is 15 months and there are many new relationships of her with the inmates

Our View –

First of all I would like to clear that this show not basically focuses on the Latinas or specifically the Hispanics but they have a majority of the cast which is Latina and for that reason I have selected this series to be considered for the Hispanic Heritage Month series.

It is based on a real life of Piper Kerman, and the show is based on her bestselling memoir. The show is really good and it shows how the inmates live in the prison with some real life troubles and some moments which are fiction but it gives a pretty good view of it.

When i first started watching Orange is the New Black I found it very entertaining as all the characters are given a very different back story. This show has brilliant writers and also should be recommended to a person who enjoys an open minded show.

This show will make you laugh, it will make you cry and sometimes you might even find it boring but its definitely worth your time. This show even touches numerous topics like #MeToo, ICE and immigration and many more.

This show is also very popular as it features a transgender person, Laverne Cox known as Sophia Bursett on the show. Her acting skills and her performance is absolutely to the mark.

This show is no doubt long but it is also worth watching all the way to the end.

Directed by – Alex Rodrigo

Seasons released so far – 4

IMDb Ratings – 8.4/10

Rotten Tomatoes – 93%

Story Line –

The story line is based on a criminal mastermind who calls himself the Professor who brings 8 thieves to lock themselves and take hostages of the Royal Mint and the Bank of Spain as he guides the thieves and tells them the further elaborated plan. The interesting thing is Professor gave names of all the thieves the name of the cities.

Our Views –

(Spoiler Alert!!)

The part focuses on starting the elaborated heist. First starts with getting all the thieves together at a place and giving them a name like Tokyo, Berlin, Nairobi, Moscow, Rio, Denver, Helsinki and Oslo.

They start the heist of the Royal Mint. The police assign the negotiator and Professor involved romantically with her.

In this part or in fact in the whole series we can see that almost for every hiccup in the plan the Professor has a counter plan lined up and everything goes good.

The role of the Professor has given justice to his role very flawlessly. I have enjoyed many Spanish shows but this turns out to be one of the best one.

As this is the first part and the story just starts to unfold and the anticipation is very high and it’s so fun to see all the problems the heist gives to the thieves and how the professor guides.

In the part 2 of money heist it can be seen that it has been rushed as compared to the first season. There are times when we hate Tokyo due to her deeds in the heist and how that creates trouble for the Professor.

Here Berlin dies and at that point starts to get very attached with him. But he then sacrificed himself for the team.

At the end of part 2, after the heist is completed we get back and start thinking that there is no way this story can continue but then they throw a romantic angle which is then led to a new vendetta seeking heist.

All the actors have their adequate importance and all did their part very flawlessly. Even though you enjoyed the part 1 and 2 very much there still might be chances that you may not enjoy the part 3 and 4.

We can see that now it’s not only the question of heist but this time it’s personal and they even face betrayal from their own inner circle.

In the upcoming part 5 the show takes a U turn and some angle might be explored in the heist.

Eagerly waiting for part 5.

Despite losing the case, Khan is adamant to find the truth. As another tragedy strikes and the family is in the depths of despair, Aarya is left with a fresh dilemma.

Our Views –

First of all the plot set is amazing and some of the twists shown throughout the season are mind blowing. It focuses mainly on the extent to which a parent can go to protect its family. Sushmita really did come back with a bang. This series can get you hooked up very easily and you will complete in a weekend.

Though it has its own share of melodrama and fluff and sometimes it feels very predictable scenes but other than that its a much watch. The series contain of 9 episodes each of approximately 1 hour long so technically it would just take 9 hours to complete the whole series in a go ( if you are a binge watcher).

JL50

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Release Year – 2020

Genre – Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller

Cast – Abhay Deol, Pankaj Kapoor, Piyush Mishra, Ritika Anand

Director – Shailender Vyas

Writers – Shailender Vyas

Story line –

JL 50 follows a CBI officer, Shantanu Das (Abhay), who is tasked with investigating a plane crash. It turns into a top secret mission as they realize that the plane that crashed somewhere in northern Bengal took off from a Kolkata (then Calcutta) airport 35 years ago.

Our Views –

India doing a Sci-Fi movie with a good taste is really rare. But here they really went out of the way and created a masterpiece. JL50 talks about a very unique subject which is rarely talked about in any other Indian movie and that is Time Travel. Though the web series is based on a real story, they have very beautifully linked it with Time Travel.

Pankaj Kapoor says “Time never moves, Time is always present” in the beginning of the series and it seems on this basis they have explained the whole series. Pankaj Kapoor aka Professor Das appears to be very fishy right from the start. An airplane goes missing with some important delegates in it and in order to investigate it, a plane which was lost 35 years ago is recovered (with 2 survivors).

Abhay Deol aka Shantanu keeps the story rolling forward as being the lead CBI investigator. He is not a believer of time travel until all the other possibilities are not ruled out. He was left at an orphanage and he never got to get closure about his parents but due to time travel he got to know that the survivor of the time travel actually turns out to be his mother.

It explains a time travel mystery with the sources of the explanation which dates back to the times of Emperor Ashoka and later solved by a scientist in 1984. This web series is on Sony LIV with 4 episodes each and not more than 35 min each is easy to watch in a go. And it’s definitely highly recommended.

NEVER HAVE I EVER(SEASON 1)

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Release Year – 2020

Cast – Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Poorna Jagannathan, Richa Moorjani, Ramona Young, Lee Rodriguez, Darren Barnet, Jaren Lewison

Genre – Teen Drama

Directed By – Mindy Kaling, Kabir Akhtar, Adam Shapiro, Lang Fisher

Produced By – Mindy Kaling, Lang Fisher, Howard Klein, David Miner, Tristram Shapeero

Number of episode – 10

Storyline –

The story centers around Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), a 15-year-old girl from Sherman Oaks, California. After a socially horrible freshman year, Devi wants to change her social status, but friends, family, and feelings do not make it easy for her.

After Devi’s father, Mohan (Sendhil Ramamurthy) passes away, Devi loses the use of her legs for three months. The following year, she tries to deal with her grief, Indian identity and school life, also struggling with her relationship with her mother, Nalini (Poorna Jagannathan), her beautiful cousin, Kamala (Richa Moorjani), her two best friends, Eleanor (Ramona Young) and Fabiola (Lee Rodriguez), her high school crush, Paxton (Darren Barnet), and her nemesis, Ben (Jaren Lewison).

The series is mostly narrated by professional tennis player John McEnroe, with one of the episodes narrated by Andy Samberg.

Our View-

The episode starts with Devi V. praying to god about some requests about this year of high school. She wants to fall in love and have a boyfriend who is a hottie and wants to change the image of her in the minds of everyone at school. She has a huge crush on Paxton and very crazy about him and wants to have sex with him and she approaches him to with this unfamiliar request but she cannot go forward with it. Paxton gives vibes of Peter Kevensky to Jake Ryan to Gilbert Blythe to Jordan Catalano and he is thoughtful and observant. Her nemesis, Ben first gives her trouble but they start getting along very well and she even kisses him and  stays at his home when she leaves her home when her mum decides to go back to India.

Devi is very jealous of her cousin Kamala as she thinks she is better than her in everything and mother seems overly fond of her. Kamala’s character, on the other hand, is that of a confused woman, supposedly doing her masters at Caltech, with a South Asian boyfriend who she dumps with remarkable ease for a desi stranger. Devi seems relieved when she knows about Kamala’s boyfriend as to know that she is not who she shows to her mother.

It shows a very typical Indian side leaving in America like the boy coming to see the girl in an arranged marriage, the ganesh pooja, Indian community meeting and gossiping, people abandoning a woman who married outside the caste. In season 2 Devi will have to choose between Paxton and Ben.

THE STRANGER

StoryLine –

The Stranger is an eight part British Mystery thriller series written primarily by Danny Brocklehurt and based on the 2015 Harlan Coben novel of the same title. A mysterious stranger tells a man a secret that has a devastating impact on his seemingly perfect life. This stranger is a woman in her 20s with a baseball cap and a bomber jacket, and is learned to be correlated with more secrets as the series progresses. This secret affects the man’s wife who goes missing as a result.

Our Views

As the series evolves, it can be seen that there is a stranger who has many targets in the town to reveal their secret publicly for money. The secrets are revealed about the life around Adam Price (Richard Armitage). This series keeps us on our toes throughout. We can see a skillful tying of all the twisty knots and gives a charging experience. But the end given was a bit unsatisfactory and failed to provide the climax which is built throughout the series. The main crux which Adam gets in the end is that the secret is better buried. The speed is properly propelled and not speeded.

Our Views

It is a workplace comedy, that centers a group of people.Space Force shows charismatic friendship between Mark and Dr. Mallory and a different level of trust between them. Lisa Kudrow has a small role but has a greater impact on the show. It has a witty voice of science and lack of logic. But it is definitely relaxing to watch it once and funny too.
