Our Views
Bulbul is a decent horror flick film which is very rare. It is not a perfect film, it’s very predictable and go-getting. The Bulbbul fits the physical description of the furious female spook of Indian folklore – beautiful, with long hair and feet twisted backwards. The story is from 1800’s and focuses mainly Bulbbul (Dimri), a free spirit who used to love climbing trees and plucking raw mangoes in her ‘maayka’, has to turn into an obedient wife to her much older husband Indranil (Bose), who lives in a big haveli, with his mentally challenged twin Mahendra (Bose again), Mahendra’s wife Binodini (Dam), and younger brother Satya. The plot revolves around a child bride married to a very elder Rahul Bose, grows and ends up ruling over a mansion. She experiences a painful sexual abuse and then leads to murders of evil men in her village. The names resemble very much with the famous Rabindranath Tagore’s “Chokher Bali”, the story is very different. Bulbbul focuses on the topics like child marriage, sexual abuse, domestic violence, murderand revenge and a beautiful way to depict them.
It shows the early era of all white attire widows with shaved heads and banished from the people of the village and forced to live in separate premises, the crisp dhutis and fabulous shawls of men, the horse carriage drawn by the servants. It is feminist, powerful and it shows the tale of a wronged woman told with a style and precision.
